Abstrakt:

Initiated by Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the first summit of the regional format of the Carpathian Integration Initiative (CII)—originally known as the Carpathian Eight—took place on 18 September 2026 in Huta, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. Alongside Austria, Czechia, Poland, Serbia, Slovakia, Romania and Ukraine, Hungary was also intended to be a member. The platform is designed to enable Ukraine to participate on an equal footing in regional cooperation with EU member states and to streamline its integration with the EU. It is also intended to facilitate the development of infrastructure links in the region. However, Hungary’s boycott of the summit and the ambivalent stance of Czechia and Slovakia may have a negative impact on the format’s actual capacity for joint action and the implementation of agreements.
