Abstract:

The Russian authorities are readying the country for the September elections to the State Duma, expecting a sustained increase in public discontent. To maintain control over the campaign and election, they have initiated the formation of licensed opposition parties and are developing instruments of repression against critics of the regime. The latter will be a permanent feature of the Russian system ahead of the presidential elections in 2024.
